Lit: A Memoir Well, now I know what happened to all the emotion I didn’t hear in Mary Karr’s voice in The Liars’ Club, the story of her blighted childhood. She stuffed it all down until adulthood. This book is one long screech of pain.

To me, this Mary Karr is more genuine than the author of Liar’s Club. That memoir was very stylized — down-home Texas tall tale, outsized, but to me, antiseptic. In Lit, Mary Karr emotes. She italicizes, she all-caps, she streams exclamation points. She hisses, she claws, she swigs. And she swears… a lot.

That’s okay by me. Her descent into alcoholism is finely observed. She feels the neverending pull of drink: “These powerful urges are close to complete madness, the old drunk self so fully occupying my body, it’s like being possessed.” And hooray for a writer who doesn’t flinch at honestly recounting the train wreck that is new motherhood — she titles one chapter Postal Partum. “A doubled cough punctures my head like two shots from a nail gun,” she writes about being wakened by her son’s midnight coughing.

I would have been completely besotted by this book if it weren’t for two things. One, the style was too, too twee, with several recurring annoyances: “We loved each other this way, Daddy and I, from afar.” It’s poetic the first time but after the hundredth time, I just want to read “Daddy and I loved each other from afar.” The other authorial tic that bugged me was an odd use of the word “which”: “But I saw the shine in Mother’s eyes as that opera washed over her. Which music Daddy cared diddly for.” Over and over and over again.

The second caveat is more general. In the last third of the book, Karr undergoes a spiritual awakening. Its gradual nature and her resistance was the best part of the book, as far as I’m concerned. What I didn’t like is that to prove something, to prove her “street cred,” I guess, Karr must have felt she had to be more raw, use more profanity, swagger more. I guess she doesn’t want the “wuss” label now that she espouses a belief. I hope she can overcome that posturing at some point. It creates the same remoteness I felt in Liar’s Club, although this time it’s not therapy or creative writing courses that create the distance, it’s religion.

I had purchased Charla’s previous bestseller, How Not to Look Old, gleaned a few tips (she dared me to buy designer jeans, despite being in my 50s), and then sold it on Amazon. Because, let’s face it, whatever tips she gave will be outdated in a decade. Her new book, however, has the potential to be a keeper. It contains timeless tips on how to look ten or more pounds thinner simply by the way you dress.

The book covers all sorts of body types such as big bust, wide face, arm flap, large belly, wide hips and thighs, big booty, heavy calves, wide feet and ankles. There is also a chapter on how to never look fat in summer, another for winter, another for workout clothes and one for evening clothes. A final chapter tells you what to do with your cast offs.

Each chapter has photos of famous people used as examples–mostly stars, but even Michelle Obama pops up in a couple. Each chapter also has quite a few special sections. “You know you have it when…” contains a checklist to see if you have the problem. There is a list of “High-fat/No-fat” clothing and accessories analyzed for their potential fat-making content. The “Swap-outs” section tells you how to exchange pieces of fashion for your body type. There is also a list of “10 Things that Make You Look Fat.” “Thinner by Tonight!” provides “instant gratification” for dropping a dress size in seconds. “Brilliant Buys” gives specific recommendations for products that work, detailing brands, style number, prices and where to get them. The “Vows” section has (sometimes humorous) vows for your type. There is also special advice for the petite as well as the size 14 and up. The “Don’t waste a penny on” section warns you about “beauty bull” and fashion hype, while the “Going to Extremes” section informs you on cosmetic surgery, dermatological treatments, and other possible solutions. The “Don’t you Dare” section gives you a one-sentence piece of advice that “even your best friend might not tell you.”

Since I am a classic apple shape, I went straight to the chapter on Buddha Belly. The first page has “AKA” with other names for your type; some of mine were “jelly belly, belly fat, pot belly, belly rolls, and girly gut.”I am told to “live in bike shorts” as the easiest way to drop a size fast. I should also switch all my underwear to shapewear such as Spanx, high waste bike shorts, Lip in a Box, TC, Wacoal or Donna Karan.

To my dismay, I learn that a dress is better for me than a skirt or pants. (I hate wearing dresses!) And the dress should be empire waste with a belt high above my waistline. I am happy to see photos of Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock and Gina Gershon all modeling the kind of dress with a belt that should flatter my figure. (Perhaps they are secretly apple shapes too.) 10 things I should never wear include a short top, a wide belt, a belt at my waist, tuck in tops, long fitted tees covering my stomach, bathrobe-style coats and knits, high-waist skirts and pants, heavy-duty layering, tight sequined tops and dresses, and waist high shapers. Some of these I have been guilty of wearing and I am given an explanation for why I shouldn’t.

There is also a list of every kind of jacket or blazer and the style I should buy it in. For example, if I want a “safari jacket,” it should be “belted, patch-pocketed, with epaulettes.” (What are “epaulettes?”) In the “High Fat vs. No Fat” section I see a woman dressed to look very fat, in a skin-tight dress which I would never dare wear. I am amazed to see how much better she looks with the black empire waist dress with a thin belt above the waistline. Some of my “thinner by tonight” tips are things I never thought of, while one of them makes me laugh: “Hold your bag in front of your stomach, a tried-and-true celebrity trick. A big clutch works. Small dogs and babies do, too.”

Well, Charla, that last book you wrote cost me a lot of money in shopping. I can see I’m going to have to hit the malls again! I might even have to get a small dog or baby as an accessory.

Where the God of Love Hangs Out: Fiction Amy Bloom is one of my favorite authors. Some of her short stories–in Love Invents Us, Come to Me and A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You–are among the best I’ve ever read. And her latest story collection, Where the God of Love Hangs Out, is a worthy addition to this list.

There are two sets of interrelated stories in this collection and some unrelated ones. The Hole in Our Gospel: What Does God Expect of Us? The Answer That Changed My Life and Might Just Change the World As I cracked open this nearly 300 page book I found a biography of a man that compelled me. Richard was a godly husband and father to 5 children and was the President of Lenox China before giving up his Jaguar, large home, and large salary to become the President of World Vision. He went from living the country club lifestyle to sitting in grass huts in Uganda feeding children who are starving. Why? Why did he give up the American dream?

Richard told the story of a pastor friend who went through the Bible literally cutting out with scissors, all the verses on poverty and then when he preached on poverty, he held his ragged, tattered Bible in the air and said “Brothers and sisters, this is our American Bible; it is full of holes…here are all the Biblical texts we ignore.”

Richard goes into full detail about the epidemic of poverty in our world that American Christians just simply ignore. 26,500 children will die today due to causes related to poverty – whether it’s starvation, dirty water, ravages of war, disease or AIDS. That’s the equivalent of 100 jet liners crashing just today! He knows how Americans value our airplanes and hate to see one crash – so he compares the statistic to a plane wreck.

If we hear the story of a child dying in a car accident – we are sad for the family. But if we learn that it is our next door neighbor’s child who died we are deeply grieved for the family. And if our own child dies – well – our world is turned upside down. For some reason we place less value on the children dying half way around the world than we do our own children – but GOD DOES NOT!

Oh, this book was so convicting as it told stories of children eating dirt patties with butter to ease their starving bellies. As I imagined the orphans of the AIDS epidemic spending most of their day looking for food and retrieving dirty water – I felt convicted about my own children and how they turn their noses up at their peanut butter and jelly sandwich that doesn’t have the crust cut off!

What does God expect us to do about all this poverty? Richard reminds us of Matthew 25 where Jesus speaks of judgement day. Jesus says that the criteria for dividing the sheep from the goats will be:

“When I was hungry you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

The righteous ask “when did we see you hungry Lord?” And Jesus replied “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine , you did for me. Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you who are cursed into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink…” And the righteous went to eternal life.

Wow – did you catch that? – the people who did not feed the hungry or give drink – went to eternal fire! God has a pretty STRONG opinion on what he expects us to do – wouldn’t you say??? If you are like me – you spend much of your Christian days trying to do what is right as a mom, wife and servant in the church – avoiding the really bad sins. But this “squeaky clean” approach is not what God is looking at on judgement day. God is not just looking at our faith – but our evidence of our faith – and specifically – how we helped the poor.

I have to admit and be open here – this book completely humbled me – at one point in the book – I literally stopped reading and said out loud “shut up!” and began to cry. I am deeply grieved by my failure in this area.

I have shared much of my reading with my husband and children and I hope to make some strides forward in this area as a family – the task is so overwhelming but this one quote motivates me to try – “Don’t fail to do something because you can not do everything.”

Citizens of London: The Americans Who Stood with Britain in Its Darkest, Finest Hour This may be Lynne Olson’s finest book. Not only is it well written, but it is well researched and packed with information without feeling like you were reading a book report or a textbook. Wartime London comes alive in her descriptions of the ‘Blitz’ and the way the average person went about their lives during this time of fear, death and privation.

Thrown into the mix are three Americans who had a major impact on the British and how they saw Americans before we go into ‘it’. Arriving in 1937, Murrow became famous for his reporting, ‘This is London’ became his tag line way before ‘Goodnight and Good Luck’. Murrow’s reports from London of the way the British stood up to the Germans and especially the daily bombing for almost two straight months, brought the horror of war into America’s homes prior to December 7, 1941.

Hardly known by the Post-War generation, John Gilbert Winant was American Ambassador to the Court of St. James, during most of the war. He was beloved by the man on the street in London because he spent much of his time walking them and sharing the dangers with his fellow Londoners during the worst of the bombings. He also contributed greatly to the understanding between the British and American servicemen who invaded England before they invaded Fortress Europe.

Though W. Averill Harriman was sent to England, ostensibly to administer the ‘Lend-Lease’ Program, he seemed to be everywhere in London. He became a close friend of the Churchill’s (he had an affair with son Randolph’s wife, who he married twenty years later) and an adviser to the British PM during most of the war. In 1944 he was sent to Moskow as our Ambassador to the USSR. But he managed to get invited to Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam.

The best part of Olson’s book, is that she doesn’t just keep herself to these three men. We get a look behind the curtain at Eisenhower and his Generals (both British and American) and how he spent most of the war, keeping them from each others throats. Eisenhower’s job was described as ‘dealing with a bunch of high strung pre-pubescent girls’, such were all the egos involved. That they all accused him of favoring everyone else, he must have done a fair job.

There are a wealth of great quotes and anecdotes that make the reading of this book the more pleasurable.
